Towering wooden structures slowly dissembled via a cautious, but powerful omniscient hand, while the other hand blindly searched for a popcorn kernel in a plastic baggie. Towns and cities rose and fell with economies purely based on wood, ore…and sheep, yet the settlers did not seem deterred with pizza nearby. Hammer-wielding heroes, Triforce hungry villains, and curious pink characters commanded by game controller duked it out in various interdimensional battling platforms from the deep jungle to soaring space—all from a mere projector screen located at the Pentland Bear Cave. What an odd scene this would be, yet it’s a familiar one to the Honors students who attended the recent Game Night on April 22.

Game Night was very well attended; Christopher Hughes, 4th year Honors student and Honors Hall Resident Advisor, stated that “the prospect of video games and free food” may have been an extra incentive to attend the event, but Game Nights have also been well known in Honors to foster friendships. I myself remember playfully arguing with a now dear friend over the fundamental laws of UNO at a Game Night event last year. Hughes commented that he enjoyed the opportunity to “play Super Smash Bros with non-resident Honors students,” since he could “play with [Honors] residents any time.” This is one of Game Night’s strong points, as it allows for a more diverse group of Honors students to interact with one another and create more ties within our community.

A departure from the biweekly Game Nights in previous years, the date and location planned for this Game Night’s event allowed Honor students to adjust their schedules to play board and video games with their fellow students. So with that said, cheers to the recent and future Game Night events: Let the games begin!
